An allegation of embezzlement has surfaced against a member of the Village Police (Gram Police) in the Bandaber Union of Roumari Upazila. The accused allegedly took money from several people by promising to provide them with VGD (Vulnerable Group Development) cards.

According to the complaint, Mamun, a resident of Kutir Char village and a Village Police member of Ward No. 7, collected a total of 19,000 BDT from several underprivileged individuals. The victims realized they had been defrauded after a long period passed without receiving the promised cards.

Repeated Deception

One of the victims, a helpless woman named Shahina Begum, shared her ordeal. She stated that four years ago, Mamun took 5,000 BDT from her, promising to include her name on a list for government-allotted tin. After failing to deliver, he took another 3,000 BDT promising a VGD card, which also never materialized.

When the victim approached the Union Parishad (UP) Chairman, the responsibility to resolve the matter was given to UP Member Kazim Uddin. However, he also failed to recover the money. Having no other choice, the victim filed a written complaint with the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO).

”Mamun took money from us at different times, assuring us of VGD cards. Now, he avoids communication and hasn’t provided the cards. He keeps saying he will return the money ‘soon,’ but years have passed,” said Shahina Begum.

Official Statements

The victims have demanded a fair investigation, the return of their money, and legal action against the accused. When questioned, the accused Village Police member, Mamun, simply stated, “I am trying to return the money.”

  • Kazim Uddin (UP Member): “The Chairman tasked me with resolving the dispute regarding Mamun’s financial dealings. I tried my best, but he kept stalling me as well. Eventually, I gave up.”
  • Abdul Kader (UP Chairman): “I assigned Member Kazim to the case and I am personally trying to find a solution.”
  • Alauddin (Upazila Nirbahi Officer, Roumari): “We have received the complaint. Necessary action will be taken after verifying the facts.”
