Government, semi-government, and autonomous office employees in Chuadanga observed a three-hour work stoppage and protest program demanding the publication of the gazette of the discrimination-free Ninth Pay Scale and its implementation effective from January 1, 2026.
The program was held on Tuesday (February 3) from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The protesting employees announced that the movement would continue until their demands are met.
The protesters stated that government employees have been agitating for a long time for the implementation of a new pay scale. To this end, the government formed a pay commission, and the commission’s report has already been submitted to the government.
However, due to delays in publishing the gazette and following remarks made by the government’s energy adviser that this government would not implement the commission, government employees have become deeply frustrated and angry.
As part of the program, service activities at government offices remained suspended for three hours from the morning, causing severe inconvenience to the general public. The employees said they had waited patiently for a long time.
They added that if the government fails to provide even the minimum salary necessary to meet basic living needs, it is impossible for them to continue waiting indefinitely. As a result, they were compelled to take to the streets.
The protesters further stated that they would immediately return to work once the government implements their demands. They urged the government to ensure a minimum salary that can meet their basic necessities.
It is worth mentioning that on January 30, the Bangladesh Government Employees Demand Realization Unity Council announced a program of two-hour sit-ins each day from February 1 to February 3. If the demands are not fulfilled, the organization has announced a “Hunger March” towards the Chief Adviser’s residence, Jamuna, on February 6.
